Aotearoa Infinite Academy is New Zealand's first tuition-free online high school, pioneering accessible, world-class education for students in Years 9-13 across all of Aotearoa. We combine international (Pearson Edexcel pre-IGCSE and IGCSE) and national (NCEA Levels 2 and 3) curricula with a flexible, virtual learning model that prioritises wellbeing, belonging, and personalised support.
The Opportunity
Due to roll growth we're seeking an innovative, loyal and positive Deputy Principal to join our founding team and provide pastoral leadership that ensures every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive in our innovative online learning environment.
There will be a teaching component to this role, please state subject specialism.
We deliver Pre-IGCSE, IGCSE, and NCEA Levels 2-3 curriculum. Work fully remotely from anywhere in New Zealand while building a supportive, connected learning community.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Governance
Strategic Planning: Contributing to the school’s Charter and Annual Plan, ensuring that specific targets (like NCEA achievement or literacy goals) are met.
Collaboration & Leadership
Work closely with teachers, SENCO, and leadership team to support whole-student development.
Contribute to school-wide policies and procedures related to student wellbeing.
Operations & Systems
Working with our Operations Team to ensure the school functions without friction.
Curriculum & Pedagogy
Managing the delivery of our curriculum; Years 9–11 based on the Pearson Edexcel curriculum, and Year 12–13 complete NCEA Level 2 and 3. Ensuring assessment protocols are robust and moderated.
Staff Appraisal & Professional Development: Leading the "Professional Growth Cycle" for teachers, providing feedback, and organizing PLD (Professional Learning and Development).
Data Analysis: Using our Student Information System to analyse student achievement data and identifying groups that need extra support (e.g., Priority Learners).
Pastoral Care & Student Management
Restorative Practice: Leading the school’s response to behavioral issues using restorative practices.
Student Wellbeing: Overseeing the pastoral team (Deans, Counselors, and SENCO) to ensure every student is safe and supported.
Attendance & Engagement: Monitoring chronic absence and working with families and the Attendance Service to re-engage students.
Student Advocacy & Development
Act as a trusted advocate for students, building strong relational trust.
Support students in setting and achieving personal and academic goals.
Foster student leadership, self-advocacy, and independence.
Promote positive behaviour and social-emotional learning across the school.
Facilitate restorative practices and conflict resolution.
Family & Whānau Engagement
Build strong partnerships with families and whānau to support student success
Communicate regularly with parents/caregivers.
Managing and facilitating conversations with parents regarding student progress or disciplinary matters.
Community Building
Create and maintain a positive, inclusive online school culture.
Champion diversity, equity, and cultural responsiveness across the school.
What We’re Looking For:
Essential
Full New Zealand Teaching Registration
Minimum 3-5 years teaching experience with demonstrated pastoral care leadership
Strong understanding of adolescent development and wellbeing frameworks
Experience supporting students with diverse backgrounds and complex needs
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Knowledge of safeguarding procedures and mandatory reporting requirements
Ability to build trust-based relationships in a virtual environment
Desirable
Qualification or professional development in guidance, counseling, or student wellbeing
Experience in online or distance learning environments
Understanding of culturally responsive practices and Te Tiriti o Waitangi
Familiarity with restorative practices and positive behavior support
Experience with digital communication platforms and student management systems
